Batman: Arkham City is an action adventure game of 2011 , developed by Rocksteady Studios . It is the sequel to the 2009 video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum , based on the fictional DC Comics superhero Batman . The game was released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Platforms for Playstation 3 , Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows . The game was officially announced during the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards and was released worldwide the week of October 18, 2011, to console, and November 24 for PC . The most complete version called Batman: Arkham City GOTY (whose denominator “GOTY” is short for “Game Of The Year” by the large number of awards of this type granted by critics) was launched on September 7, 2012 including all extras added later by the launch downloadable content ( DLC ). Another version for Wii U was launched in 2012 with the name of Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition with new exclusive content. Arkham City was written by veteran comic book author Paul Dini , who also wrote Arkham Asylum . It features a main plot and side-missions that develop sub-plots. The main plot revolves around the imprisonment of Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) in Arkham City, a large, new super-prison five times bigger than the original asylum including a wide variety of industrial districts, iconic locations and Gotham City landmarks .
